Vietnam Mourns the Death of Communist Party Chief Nguyen Phu Trong at 80.

Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese President, visited the Embassy of Viet Nam in China at approximately 4 p.m. on July 20, 2024, to express his condolences for the passing of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong.

Upon arrival at the Embassy, Xi Jinping paid his respects at the condolence hall, where a portrait of Nguyen Phu Trong was on display. Wreaths from Xi Jinping, as well as other prominent figures and organizations, were placed in front of the portrait as a sign of respect.

Xi Jinping approached the portrait of Nguyen Phu Trong, took a moment to silently pay his respects, bowed three times, and then left a message with his signature in the condolence book.

Xi Jinping praised Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong as a dedicated Marxist and an exceptional leader of the CPV and the Vietnamese people. He highlighted Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong’s lifelong commitment to the CPV, Vietnam, and the socialist cause in the country. Xi Jinping emphasized the deep respect and admiration that Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong garnered from the party, the military, and the people of Vietnam. Reflecting on their close relationship over the past decade, Xi Jinping mentioned the announcement of the China-Vietnam community with a shared future as a significant milestone. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong, describing him as a key figure in promoting China-Vietnam relations and advancing the socialist cause. Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong’s remarkable contributions to the relations between the two parties and countries, as well as to the global socialist movement, will always be cherished and remembered.

Xi Jinping emphasized the unwavering support of the CPC and the Chinese government for the CPV in guiding the Vietnamese people towards a socialist path tailored to Viet Nam’s specific circumstances. He conveyed his optimism that, under the resolute guidance of the CPV Central Committee, the Vietnamese populace will undoubtedly transform challenges into opportunities and forge ahead in their endeavors towards reform, liberalization, and socialist advancement. Xi Jinping reiterated his strong conviction that China and Viet Nam are poised to collaborate further in advancing the establishment of a China-Viet Nam community with a shared destiny, marked by substantial and enduring progress.

Vietnamese Ambassador to China Pham Sao Mai expressed gratitude for the condolences extended by General Secretary Xi Jinping and the CPC Central Committee to the CPV Central Committee. This gesture highlights the significance that the CPC and the Chinese government place on the relationship between the two parties and countries, as well as General Secretary Xi Jinping’s personal regard for Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong. The Vietnamese side is deeply touched by this display of solidarity. Pham Sao Mai emphasized Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong’s dedication to strengthening ties with China and his efforts in enhancing the friendship between Viet Nam and China. The Vietnamese side is committed to upholding Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong’s vision and implementing the mutual agreements made by the top leaders of both nations. They will continue to prioritize friendly cooperation with China as a strategic choice and key aspect of Viet Nam’s foreign policy. Additionally, they will work towards building a shared future for Viet Nam and China, which holds great strategic importance. Cai Qi and Wang Yi were also present to offer their condolences.
